Keeping the lines of communication open
In the Speak Up! sections of both the Kids' Guide and Teen Guide, children are encouraged to speak up: talk about their feelings, ask parents questions, and let their parents know when something concerns them.
The information provided here includes tips for keeping the lines of communication open between you and your children. Suggestions are offered for:
- Making opportunities to talk with your children
- Encouraging conversation
- Listening to what they have to say
- Encouraging their questions
- Answering their questions
During discussions with your children, look for opportunities to assure them that:
- The break-up was not their fault; it had nothing to do with them
- They will always have two parents; neither you nor the other parent will stop loving or supporting them
- Both parents will continue to take care of them, even though one of you is living apart from the family
If are concerned that your child has become increasingly withdrawn and is not willing to communicate with you since learning about the separation or divorce, talk to your family doctor.
